Moving

This blog has served me well through my first year of running, and I have been grateful to all those who have offered encouragement and inspiration.

As may be apparent, I have not been able to update here with much in the way of content, and the focus has changed. I am not certain whether I will be running much over the winter here in Maine, although I do intend to remain physically active. I also have very much enjoyed hearing about the daily fitness achievements of my mom and brother, who have been commenting here.

Thus, I am going to retire this journal, and leave it as yet another internet artifact. Perhaps the accounts of my experiences with the C25K plan and taking up running will be of interest to someone!

To better serve my current needs, I've begun a new livejournal for the use of myself and my family to communicate regarding our fitness progress. It may be found here

Thanks again, and good luck with all your fitness goals!

Congratulations Dave, on lifting 300! I can't even imagine it. It's a credit to your dedication to your regular training that you made it to this goal. Hooray!

I don't have much to report. The rainy weather and early darkness has been stifling my running enthusiasm pretty hard, though I've been getting in at least 30 min of walking every day. I think we're going to go check out the gyms next week - the novelty of doing something different will hopefully bring back some of my enthusiasm. At least I've been eating healthfully!

Yesterday's Exercise:
60 min walking
3 mile run (~31 min)

The first 30 min of walking was at lunch. But the universe apparently decided Bob and I needed more walking, since then in the afternoon Bob locked his keys inside the house (including the car keys). So he had to walk the 30 min to my office, then 20 min to and back from the coffee shop while waiting for me to finish work, then we both walked the 30 min home again with my spare key. Then we went running! I was really pleased that Bob was able to both walk that far and then run (he did 1.25 miles, then walked .75, then ran another .5 or so with Maureen and I). It seems like the orthotics really may be helping.

Dave -- Thanks for the advice on weights. I enjoyed doing weights earlier in the year when we joined a gym in CT, and I'm looking forward to trying them again when we join this winter. I agree that it would benefit me overall: more muscle, better metabolism, help running. I know it's also supposed to be good for strengthening your bones. What I need to do is figure out a routine I can do regularly that breaks the circuit up into managable size pieces I can do over the course of the week. I had some trouble because I kept trying to do everything at once, twice a week, but that just burned me out I think. A little every day seems better. I also should be using my ball at home for doing ab stuff. Maybe that will be my goal for next week: to start doing crunches again.

Great work Mom and Dave! I'm really pleased to see both your progress reports, especially when my own are so sketchy. And hello John! It's always good to "meet" other runners up here in Maine. I hope you enjoy Portland!

My running floon is low at the moment, probably because of A. the decreasing daylight, B. the endless rain, and C. I've lost momentum. I know that what I need to do is just grind through it, so I will try not to complain. On the other hand, I have plenty of enthusiasm for walking, and I'm wondering if maybe it's time to switch over to an indoor gym to keep myself active. I must investigate the local Y and see if it's financially feasible to get some sort of 3-6 month membership.

This weekend's activity consisted of moving all our posessions still down in storage in CT into our trailer, then unloading them again up here in Maine. Also, some recreational walking. We got in a 3-4 mile walk in the rain on Monday, and 30 min walking yesterday.

Today the weatherfolk claim we may see sun!

Wednesday's Exercise:
30 min walk
2 mile run (it was very, very dark!)

Thursday's Exercise:
30 min walk
And plenty of walking around shopping for some new fall clothing :-)

I may switch to a weekly summation here, as things are hectic and we are away on several weekends this month. Keep up the good work Mom and Dave!
